Which Ways Does Technology Affect Your Eyes?

People use computer, laptops and cell phones for different purposes. Nowadays, whether using them for work or play, many people are still spending many hours a day in front of computer screen or mobile phones reading, texting, typing on laptops or playing on tablets.

But have you ever thought of the bad effects for your eyes from above things? There is not any researches showing that constant technology use can cause any permanent vision damage. However, according to Dr. Richard Shugarman- a volunteer professor of ophthalmology at the University of Miami, staring at bright screens for many hours can lead to smaller-scale problems. Many people often complain about their eyes feeling uncomfortable. In addition, they think that there's something wrong with their vision. However, they don't always realize ocular discomfort can be a result of using too much technology. Following are some common eye ailments which can arise from staring much at screen:

Tension headaches

Mr Shugarman also said that high contrast from lit screens can cause headaches. Reading dark print on an extremely bright background can cause spasms of the muscles which leads to stress headaches. That's the reason why e-readers such as the Amazon Kindle or the Barnes & Noble Nook are made for long reads. Besides, they are designed to have black text displayed on a gray background. Reading e-books which are made for e-readers on a cellphone, where the screen contrast is not made for long reads can also bring headaches.

Dry eye

When you look at something in the distance, your eyes will automatically blink a certain number of times. However, the blink rate also slows down when you look at something closer to your face, Shugarman said. This means that tears evaporate more quickly than when you were blinking more frequently. Therefore, people who have drier eyes than the general population can exacerbate dryness.

Eye strain

The brink rate decreases when you look at things in close distance. But your eyes also converge slightly. Spending a lot of hours on a computer or hand-held device will keep your eyes converged and strains the eye muscles to cause headaches. The eyes are always more comfortable when they are parallel and your eyes will be parallel when you look at far distances.

To avoid this eye strain, you had better look away from the screen a few times an hour so that eye muscles could have a short break.
