Microsoft’s former engineer explains why Bing cannot compete with Google

Why Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, could not surpass Google? Find out the cause through sharing words of Nikhil Dandekar, a former engineer of Microsoft, who had a strong attachment to the project Bing from 2007 to 2013.

1. Google is the leader

Google started in 1999 while Microsoft only developed search engine seriously in 2005. Most of the search systems and algorithms are repeated uncountable times. By repeating, search engines get better over time as the following version will increasingly improve more than the previous one. Google started 6 years ahead of Bing so they should have plenty of repeat time to better system and algorithms. For example, Google currently owns the 5th-generation data center technology while Bing’s still remains rudimentary.

2. Google has a very large data warehouse

Most algorithms of search engine depend on user data in the past to serve the present version of the algorithm. Google with a market share of 5 to 6 times larger than Bing will have the data of more than 5 to 6 times to analyze and use. This means that even if Bing use algorithms identical to Google, their search results are still worse because they have less data.

3. The ability to better attract talent

Between 2007 and 2012, the search engine war became drastic than ever. Google, with its reputation as a company not only creative but also very kind to developers, attracted a lot of talent. Bing affected by anti-Microsoft movement should not be able to recruit as Microsoft. Talented people are often interested in the work and the impacts they have, so they often choose the company will pay higher wages.

4. Google invests more

As far as I know, Google has always invested many resources on search engine than Bing. That is, at any given time, Google will always have more people to do search work, they also have more machines and in general, to invest more money into search engine than Bing.

5. The orientation of the company

During its existence, Google has always driven them to become the company developing the best search engine in the world. For Microsoft, the main priority has always been Windows and Office. Other projects such as Bing always right behind Windows and Office.

Microsoft seems to be impossible / difficult to change the above things. Therefore, it is very hard for Bing to beat Google in the search market in the future.
